Zach de la Rocha

Zack de la Rocha is one of my heroes. He is a true political activist and lyrical genius. Every single Rage Against the Machine album should be considered essential listening at this point – especially if you are a minority male in North America.

His music helped me find my own voice as youth – one that was smart, aggressive, but sincere.

I’ve always been wondering what he has been up to since leaving Rage Against the Machine and he is currently fronting a band called One Day As a Lion with Jon Theodore from Mars Volta. Truly epic stuff. Check it out. The first EP is currently on the Anti- label.

nostaglia_shirtThe following list is a bunch of essential albums for your Punk Rock Prom. The list has been compiled by uber-poet Ryan Quinn Flanagen and was birthed after late night chats about music over in Eliot Lake. Epic stuff. Feel free to add your own tracks to the list in the comments. Check it out!

islandinsun

If there is one band that can really nail summer songs – it’s Weezer. Island in the Sun, Photograph, Surf Wax America, the list goes on and on. I think Holiday is the probably the most unrated Weezer song of all time. Anyway, I thought a bit of sunshine music fits the season.

The picture is a photoshop of an Island in Japan. A country that I will one day visit when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. After I breathe in the beauty of Nature (also do a few super awesome samurai moves in my mind); it is straight to Akihabara for me. But that aside, just listen to Holiday. It’s an epic song and it lets me daydream of that day.

And no, I’m not going to remix these songs into a poem…I don’t get to choose the music- you do!

remix-poetry

Remix Poetry is a type of game I used to play in University. Basically, classmates would give me lyrics from any three songs (any genre) and I would take three lines from each song and remix them into a new poem. The only trick was that I was allowed to add three lines of my own to work as glue.

So, I figured I might as well play the game with everyone and share the results; including full photoshop treatment. Maybe even a T-Shirt eventually. The point is it keeps me writing and you reading. That’s a win-win.

Due to time constraints, it might take me a while to publish the poems (I’m thinking two weeks) but if you donate…I’ll work on it right away. Send me the song titles and artsits name via the contact page or in the comments. If the lyrics are hard to find, then paste them into the message. You can also add your own rules in your message, I’ll do my best to work within them.
